Dear Mr. President:

Please allow me to introduce myself. Read the rest of this letter... )

I have the original of this letter signed and sealed, and waiting to be dropped off for delivery to the White House.

Dismay Over Obama's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Turnabout

First, check out this post from [livejournal.com profile] badrobot68.

These are two comments I added to that post, combined and synthesized:

This KOSsack argues that the Obama Justice Department, unlike its predecessors, takes seriously its duty to defend the law as it stands, and is therefore just doing its job.

Rationally and legally speaking, he's right. Emotionally, the language used is infuriating and demeaning. And I think we have every right to feel betrayed and scream bloody murder about this betrayal. This administration sorely needs to do some damage control if we are to maintain our political gains from the last election.

But more importantly, we need to also focus our outrage on our Congresscritters (both House and Senate) and let them know that a law which forces such absurd interpretation of the Constitution and legal precedent is simply a bad law, and must be disposed of forthwith. It is in Congress's power alone to do so. And Congress needs to take this off the President's already crowded plate.

On the other hand... It turns out that the brief everyone is so p.o.'ed about was co-written by a Mormon Bush appointee, according to Americablog.

Now we have a true and proper target for outrage, methinks. We need to have Congress complete its investigation into the politicization of the Justice Department under Bush, because absent any evidence of wrongdoing on his predecessor's part, Obama won't be able to undo the damage done.

Thanks [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear for the link and the suggestion to focus the blame where it belongs.

Oh, and I must confess, smelly briefs I don't ordinarily find that terribly objectionable, much like Brandy never did. But this one reeks to high heaven.

Didn't get a chance to blog about Thursday yet. I took the bus in from South Everett Park & Ride, and after work made my way to Cafe Septieme on Capitol Hill.

On the first leg of the run from Bothell to Cap Hill on Route 372, I sat behind a clean shaven, long haired dude who was crashed out in his seat. He woke up and carried on a mostly one-sided conversation with me the rest of the way to UW main campus. He introduced himself as Dave, and told me he was about my age and had an 18-year-old son. Having spent most of his career cooking, he was currently taking odd jobs in landscaping and studying for his Commercial Drivers' License test. One of his obvious interests was muscle cars of the 70's, I also discovered. But he had a habit of speaking in non sequiturs, jumping from topic to topic as though his mouth wasn't keeping up with his brain; on several occasions he mentioned he'd "burned out", perhaps due to a bit too much 420, which caused him a number of problems.

We parted company at UW and I hopped on the 49 electric bus to Cap Hill, stepping off a block from the restaurant. Click here if you don't mind a little name-dropping... ) It was also Dining Out for Life day so some of the proceeds of our meal would go to a worthy cause, Lifelong AIDS Alliance. We chatted about art, gay culture, President Obama, and Lord only knows what else, and had some great food.

After dinner we said our goodbyes and caught the 43 bus downtown to catch the 510 bus back to South Everett. Gary had parked right next to me at the Park & Ride. When we got home I fell asleep on the loveseat.

[Edited to remove an unnecessary observation. Thanks and apologies to [livejournal.com profile] bitterlawngnome, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear, for pointing out the correction.]

I've only been able to catch scattered fringes of the coverage from the Yearning for Zion polygamist compound in Texas. But from what I've seen, I find I have a lot of sympathy for the folks at the center of the case, however unsympathetic they may seem at first glance -- and not so much for the well-meaning but hopelessly bureaucratic folks who represent the State of Texas in this matter.

My take, cut for length... )

Bottom line: We need to keep the government out of the what must be dozens of bedrooms in the YFZ compound, in order to ensure they stay out of our individual bedrooms as well.

Wait a minute... I thought he was a dinner jacket, not a cocktail dress. ;-)

(Video is no longer available. It was the music video for "Iran So Far Away" on Saturday Night Live, featuring a Mahmoud Ahmadinejad look-alike in various romantic situations, including as a chanteuse in a slinky red cocktail dress lounging atop a piano.)

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear pointed out to me that none of this would be an issue if Senator Tearoom, rather than trolling in an airport bathroom on his way east, had instead come west and made legal and more pleasurable hookups here on Capitol Hill in Seattle. The likelihood of his being recognized by Seattleites would have been fairly low (of course, now that he's gotten his picture plastered all over creation that is clearly no longer true) and his family back in Idaho would have been none the wiser.

A caller on the Ed Schultz show this afternoon observed that now Sen. Craig can with the same word describe himself as well as name his home state. (Who da ho? Idaho.)

Oh, and as I observed with another poster on soc.motss some years ago, it makes no sense for someone in this day and age to claim they have no alternative to the closet -- or, in this case, the water closet.

Little Brandy has been itchy lately and, though she'd just had a bath a week or so ago, hadn't had her medicine. So I gave her a chewy treat for heartworm, then later a brushing and a bath, topped off with a squirt of flea killer on her back. The chewy treat went over rather well, surprisingly, but she knows when bath time rolls around and is quick to run away. At the moment she's napping on the bed.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear is out like the proverbial light, having not slept well overnight and needing some relief from runny nose, coughing and hacking. So the place is pretty quiet.

The weekend... )

Yesterday Rochester had its annual Pride Parade. While the parade itself got by with a light sprinkling of rain, the festival which was to follow in Highland Bowl amphitheater was effectively ruined by a heavy downpour with thunder and lightning, requiring cancellation of the RGMC's performance.
Pictures... )
More pictures here.

After the performance was canceled, [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear and I went to Old Country Buffet for dinner. A number of tables were filled with Boy Scouts from California on their way to or from camp; we'd seen their buses in the parking lot. Many of the Scouts had patches on their neckerchiefs with a picture of a bear on them. Gary was wearing his "Big Bear Inc." T-shirt from San Francisco, and one of the Scouts happened to notice it, as I overheard him muttering "Bears?" as we passed him on the way to the buffet. Of course, there were a few other bearish men there as well, as can be expected. ;-)
