Election day meme:
1. Stop talking about politics for a moment or two.
2. Post a reasonably-sized picture in your LJ, NOT under a cut tag, of something pleasant, such as an adorable kitten, or a fluffy white cloud, or a bottle of booze. Something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.
3. Include these instructions, and share the love.

The story of a dog who thought she was a cat... )

So after a few sessions of cuddles and petting from both of us, we bid her farewell just before noon today. It's incredibly sad to have it end like this, but I like to think Brandy has had a long and happy life as best we could give her. Rest in peace, Brandy.

Our Brandy was decidedly not named for the singer (she was born in 1991 and the singer's first album wasn't released until 1994), although I've often joked that if we were to get another dog we should name her Monica. However, reading this story was more than a little disturbing. Hey, she's not even old enough to drive! (Her 16th birthday will be in September although it's pretty much a given she won't live to see it.)

Brandy's health update, cut for the squeamish )

Our little Brandy is a fighter, that's for sure. Dunno about Ms. Norwood (the other Brandy) though.

As you may have read in an earlier post of mine, our Cairn Terrier, Brandy, has been diagnosed with a malignant bone tumor in her left shoulder area. Veterinarian's Hospital, the continuing stoooory... )

The saving grace is this particular tumor, which doesn't often occur in small dogs anyway, is also atypical in that it has been progressing very slowly. I'm beginning to think she might have a good four to six months left when originally we thought she'd be lucky to get two.

She's on pain medication, of course, which still keeps her reasonably happy and, to be quite honest, she's really more active than she should be (she could break the affected bone at any time and such a fracture might prove fatal). We now have to carry her up and down stairs, but she insists on jumping onto the furniture and I reckon that trying to stop her is an exercise in futility, short of keeping her in her cage -- quite possibly for the rest of her life, given that that bone isn't likely to get any stronger. I think we all agree that's no way to assure her quality of life in whatever time she has left.

More as it happens.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear, Brandy and I spent the weekend with the Northwest Bears at Kamp Kodiak. The weekend went very well, I think, but I'm just a bit sore and tired and slept a few hours almost as soon as we got into the door.

Highlights... )

Pictures to follow, and maybe a more coherent retelling of some of the events. Later folks.

For those who don't already know, our Cairn Terrier ([livejournal.com profile] gmjambear calls her our Cairn Terror ;-), Brandy, had ten teeth extracted last Tuesday and has been rather ill as a result.

Last night Brandy began eating again, and we're all very happy for her. She's a lot more alert than she has been, too. I think backing off on the medication and feeding her a little at a time has helped a lot. She still sleeps a lot, but she always has so that's perfectly normal for her.

I think one of the biggest signs she's returned to normal is I caught her licking the pillows on the bed again. ;-)

Little Brandy has been itchy lately and, though she'd just had a bath a week or so ago, hadn't had her medicine. So I gave her a chewy treat for heartworm, then later a brushing and a bath, topped off with a squirt of flea killer on her back. The chewy treat went over rather well, surprisingly, but she knows when bath time rolls around and is quick to run away. At the moment she's napping on the bed.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear is out like the proverbial light, having not slept well overnight and needing some relief from runny nose, coughing and hacking. So the place is pretty quiet.

The weekend... )

...is wholesome even for the King." -- Emily Dickinson

Reading a recent entry in [livejournal.com profile] dakoopst's journal, along with a bunch of others, it seems like the whole of the USA has gone mad with this nonsense of terrorists under the bed, as it were. (Gee, substitute "Communist" for "terrorist" -- the words even rhyme -- and we're back to the 1950's!)

And yet, on the other hand, we have the unfolding of spring, the flowers in bloom and all that wakens from its winter sleep. It's nice to see the sunlight streaming through the windows for a change. In a moment I shall be walking little Brandy and taking a breath of fresh air.

So I won't belabor the point of how screwed-up this country is; rather, I'll enjoy the nice weather while it lasts. There will be time enough to bitch about things political later.

C'mon, Brandy, let's go.

  • During tonight's rehearsal we did a musical "thank you" to our acting musical director, Lee, to the tune of the last movement in the Britten Ceremony of Carols, "Deo Gracias". It occurred to me that we have at long last (since [livejournal.com profile] redcub's departure from the RGMC) found our new resident filk artist. (No, that is not a typo.)

  • Also in the C of C there is a section of "There is no rose" in Latin which goes "Res miranda" (translation: "a thing to behold"). To show how evil and twisted one can get with the most pious of lyrics, imagine this set to the tune of "Help Me, Rhonda": "Res miranda, res, res miranda..." ;-)

  • Then there was the moment during our small group rehearsal for the Rachmaninoff pieces we're doing, in which the lead baritone, Todd, was sort of conducting, both with his head and with his music folder (Does that make him a semi-conductor? ;-). Lee pointed out that he needed Todd to "give us more head" (and less folder). ;-)

P.S. Brandy (see icon) is so cute when she sacks out on the corner of the bed and snores.

Right now I'm feeling just a little zapped from the walking and the sun, but it's not a bad feeling.
