Just set up the new Clearwire modem with my old router and Sun workstation (actually, I used my work laptop to set it up but decided it would be better not to surf LJ with it). We get great reception up here on the second floor with the modem perched in a south-facing window; all five signal lights are consistently lit (like having five bars on your cellphone).

House is still chilly; I'm going to camp out here tonight to meet the furnace tech at 8 tomorrow morning. Catch y'all later.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear just found the notebook in which he'd written the number of miles we drove between our former home in Rochester and our current home in Renton.

2967.5 miles.

He also recorded the start time: 3:30 PM ET, Wednesday, 11/16/2005, and the start mileage on his car: 53250 miles.

In our last installment, I mentioned we had but one object missing from our cross-country move in 2005, a mantel clock. Well, I found it today -- in an unlabeled box otherwise containing bits and bobs gathered from the living room and dining room at the last minute. Judging from the packing or lack thereof, my guess is that this was one of the two boxes that did not get shipped, but instead rode with our luggage in the back of [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear's car. Gary put a fresh battery in it and it's good as new.

Just wanted to say many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kevynjacobs and [livejournal.com profile] ciddyguy for helping us unload the truck. We're about to give the trailer a final clean-out and call to have it picked up.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear and I took our friend Mike from Portland to Daly's Drive-In this evening at the suggestion of [livejournal.com profile] danthered. Gary had the regular burger, Mike and I had salmonbugers and Gary and I had raspberry shakes. I thought the salmonburger was very tasty but enjoyed the raspberry shake even more so.

Thanks for the suggestion, Daniel.

Last weekend I flew to Kansas City, MO with fellow Chorine and composer Dennis.

Day by day details... )

All in all, a very fun weekend. I'd recommend a GALA Singer's Weekend for any chorus member.

Little Brandy has been itchy lately and, though she'd just had a bath a week or so ago, hadn't had her medicine. So I gave her a chewy treat for heartworm, then later a brushing and a bath, topped off with a squirt of flea killer on her back. The chewy treat went over rather well, surprisingly, but she knows when bath time rolls around and is quick to run away. At the moment she's napping on the bed.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear is out like the proverbial light, having not slept well overnight and needing some relief from runny nose, coughing and hacking. So the place is pretty quiet.

The weekend... )

Now that I have some time on my hands I've taken up swimming again. We have a public indoor pool across the street, attached to the school, and I've started in on their adult swim from 5:30 to 6:30 in the evening. I'm not a very fast or graceful swimmer but I get by. I even did a couple of surface dives in the deep end, once retrieving a ring someone had thrown in.

The fellow in the lane next to me was somewhat bearish in appearance, about my age or slightly younger. He was doing pretty well on his laps and occupying himself between laps treading water. About 6:00 he took his cue from the woman in the far right-hand lane -- his wife, I guessed -- and they both got out of the pool together. Only then did I notice he was missing half his right leg. More power to him, I'd say.

This morning I finally completed digging out the stump of the yew bush I hacked up some weeks ago so I can get started on the patio refurbishment. The area where the bushes were gets new brick pavers (actually, I'm thinking to pull them all and mix them up for a more uniform appearance) and the whole thing needs to be raised up an inch or so, so that the snow that melts doesn't pool up and freeze solid behind the step.

No shortage of things to keep me busy, I suppose.

This has been a dramatic week at work. I took Monday off to take care of some business related to Pride weekend (mainly, picking up Brandy from the vet's) but also to ensure I used my "floating holiday" while I still had the opportunity. You see, there was an announcement that one-third of the IT department (my department) was slated to be laid off.
