Due to the anticipated chaos in downtown Seattle for May Day, I agreed to pick up Bob rather early for rehearsal, about 3:30 PM. (The usual routine is that I drive to the home Bob is sharing with Neil and Don, pick up Bob and continue to South Everett freeway station, where we board the 512 together and walk to the rehearsal space, then Bob goes in and I go off to grab dinner before returning to rehearsal.) When I arrived, Don informed me that on Friday nights, the Fireplace bar in Everett has a Bear Night which he wanted to check out. The place is normally considered a biker bar, but the owner is cool with it.

We arrived at the church about 4:30 PM, two hours early for rehearsal, so Bob suggested we enter the church through the main doors and take the elevator upstairs to the rehearsal hall as the doors at the top of the hill would be locked. That accomplished, I left through those doors and went in search of dinner. Since I needed to top up my ORCA card anyway, I walked the three blocks down the steep hill on Seneca Street to University Street Station and took care of business at the machine, then returned to Third Avenue. Since I didn't feel like climbing the hill, I walked down Third and, not seeing anything to my liking, descended to the other end of University Street Station and caught the train one stop to Westlake Center. Unfortunately, again due to the anticipated chaos, not only was the mall closed early for the day (except for Zara which has its own entrances), but also BWW where I intended to have dinner. Westlake Park was still pretty chill then, but dozens of bike cops in armor were just waiting for someone to start something.

So I decided to walk to the Pacific Place mall a couple of blocks away, reasoning that they were far enough away from the commotion that they were still functioning. In the food court on the fourth floor I selected Johnny Rockets hamburger joint, where I was served by a cute, twinkish dude with red plugs in his earlobes and a rather flirtatious manner about him, as well as a cubbier dude with a goatee behind the counter. I had a nice dinner of onion rings (served with a lion head drawn in ketchup on the bottom of a paper "monkey dish" for dipping) and a big burger. There weren't a whole lot of customers but I suppose you take what you can get under the circumstances.

Satisfied, I returned to the rehearsal space via Sixth Avenue, taking my time ascending the hill (which is longer and therefore less steep than Seneca). I suppose I could have used the escalators at the Convention Center but I didn't want to risk going out of my way and finding them closed, adding to my walk. Rehearsal went well if a bit sparsely attended. We rode home with Neil as usual.

Home for the Holidays

For his final Yuletide concert, Dennis Coleman is wrapping up his naughty and nice audience favorites, just for you! We have traditional holiday favorites ranging from a cappella sacred settings, through the "What If" carols (as reimagined by some famous Broadway composers), on to a rockin' Christmas adaptation of a possibly recognizable tune.

Our guest artist for opening weekend is Tituss Burgess, star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and 30 Rock. Don't miss out! Tickets for all shows available through Flying House Productions (except Tacoma through the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts).

Longtime Seattle Men's Chorus director to retire

Dennis Coleman, longtime artistic director of the Seattle Men's Chorus and Seattle Women's Chorus has announced that he will retire next year.

His final Seattle-area concert will be the SMC Summer concert held in conjunction with Pride Week in June of 2016.

Coleman will take his final bow at the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses) Festival in Denver in 2016.

(h/t KING 5 News)

I'm happy for Dennis and excited to find out what comes next. There will be a number of committees, made up of board members, singers, and other stakeholders including audience members and donors: one tasked with planning a big send-off for Dennis including two commissioned works, one with fundraising for the organization related to the occasion, and one with the search for new artistic direction for the Choruses.

Last night the Seattle Men's Chorus had our premiere performance of Falling In Love Again, a look at life in Germany before and during the Nazi era.

Act One features the music of Weimar Germany which inspired the musical Cabaret, including the title tune and "Wilkommen" from that musical. The Emcee from Cabaret is portrayed by Nick Garrison and I must say he's done an excellent job in the role. I get to play one of the three pigs in "Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?"; I'm the one with the brick house. (Cue up "Brick House" -- oh wait, that isn't period. :-) Also we have the Spectrum Dance company in several numbers, and Frau Schnaub, portrayed by a simply huge young chorus member (who can't wait to start growing his beard again ;-), in the comic dance number "Fräulein, Pardon". The title tune of our concert is performed by a chorus member impersonating Marlene Dietrich and backed up by the full chorus.

Act Two is an operatic piece entitled For a Look or a Touch, originally a "chamber opera" for baritone and speaking actor, and expanded to include a small ensemble (Captain Smartypants) and a full men's chorus. The chorus represents the gay men sent to the concentration camps in Nazi Germany, with costumes and makeup to create a haunting, zombie-like effect. The actor portraying Gad Beck, an aging Holocaust survivor, is David Pichette who is a well-known Seattle actor and portrayed Voltaire in last year's production of Candide. The baritone soloist, Morgan Smith, portrays the ghost of Gad's lover, Manfred Lewin, who perished in the camps.

If you have the time I would highly recommend coming to see the show at 2:00 this afternoon at McCaw Hall.

My brother used to say that to my niece (whose name happens to be Erin) many St. Pat's Days ago.

Kind of an uneventful day. I'm still coming down from the weekend. I've taken on the lead producer role for the SMC's No Talent Show at retreat, and this weekend's show turned out just fabulously, despite the change in venue from a working theater to a hotel ballroom.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear told me I'd worked a little too hard on the show, as now I have a minor chest cold (mostly a cough triggered by postnasal sinus drainage). Still, I was able to get through a somewhat grueling dental visit and yet another SMC rehearsal before virtually collapsing Monday evening. This week I am also taking on overnight patching and upgrades once more, which means I am working split shifts again.

In honor of the occasion I decided to make Pig's Ass and Cabbage the way my mom used to (fun fact: at one point in my childhood I hated cabbage and Mom would substitute green beans; nowadays I rather enjoy the cabbage). Unfortunately, the third ingredient in the traditional boiled dinner -- potatoes -- had all sprouted or rotted in the pantry. So instead we made noodle soup of the ham and cabbage. It turned out very tasty and filling.

As my folks always say, "Top o' the morning to you!" (to which the proper response is "And the rest of the day to you!")
