FRIDAY
Gary dropped me off at the airport around 4:30 AM to catch a 6:30-ish flight. A cute gingerish cubby TSO was working the X-ray belt. Gary returned through the new WA 99 tunnel under downtown but made the wrong turn at the Mercer exit; fortunately at that hour it was easily corrected. I was seated on the plane and found the seat belt about an inch too short and had to ask for an extender. A cute cub boarded with a beard like our power-lifter friend Jon in Ontario and a build more like our chorus friend Stephen in Atlanta. On the flight I watched Foxcatcher which I'd downloaded from our DVR to my phone. I liked it very much despite the disturbing story on which it was based. I didn't recognize Mark Ruffalo portraying David Schultz; I was totally thinking of Paul Giamatti, only a skosh taller. Woof!
Once we landed the plane took a long taxi going all the way around the five terminals at DFW. I'd missed breakfast so I had a big lunch at Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse at gate E14. Then I took the Skylink train around the long way to Terminal A and the train into downtown Dallas. I saw a cute cub on the Skylink train. He wore blue sunglasses, a neon blue shirt, blue jeans, blue sneakers with red soles, and a blackjacket, and towed a neon-green suitcase. He had a trim dark beard with hair to match. The train passed a building labeled the DFW BUS NESS CENTER, with the letter I completely missing from the sign (not just unlit). I texted Gary, "Should we expect a sea monster driving the bus?" I noted the new train to Fort Worth leaves from terminal B across the way.
When I arrived at the DART train station the train had just arrived so it was holding for 20 minutes before turning around to head back to Dallas. Before we got underway I pointed out the stop for Love Field to an Asian lady on the train. It was rather chilly outside (30 degrees on landing in Grapevine) but I didn't really notice it since I had been wearing a heavy leather jacket indoors and was actually rather overheated.
I got checked in to the hotel without incident and took a little disco nap and a shower before dinner. I rode in an Uber with Clint and Robin from KC; we could have walked but they weren't dressed for the cold weather. Dinner was at the Harwood Tavern. I noticed both the waiter and bartender were really cute; the bartender had a thick beard but the waiter had none. On the TV (this is, after all, a sports bar) I noticed a Dollar Shave Club ad where a cute bear shaves the letter B in his chest fur. NOOOO! I also got to show some of the folks our favorite bear reporter, Steve Kiggins, and overheard some of the guys were practically drooling over the meteorologist on Channel 11, Scott Paget.
After dinner we got an Uber ride in a black Lexus SUV, driven by a Navy nurse caring for his disabled mother. They're from Muskogee, OK. We were dropped off outside the south entrance to the hotel, and in a building on the same block was a no-name gym which was open but no one appeared to be working out. A big chocolate Lab sat in a cozy chair in the front window watching over the place.
Back at the room, I text-chatted with Gary while watching the Mavericks game on TV (they were hosting the Milwaukee Bucks). I noticed a hot bear on the Mavs, #42, Maxi Kleber, and their #77, Luka Doncic, was perfectly coiffed. Final score was Bucks 122, Mavs 107. (Cue The Price Is Right loser horns.) After the game I watched Channel 11 news to see what the guys were talking about. Scott Paget has no face fur but cleans up well, despite the Kelly Hrudy hairdo. Also, Shay Mooney of country duo Dan + Shay was on the news rehearsing for the Grammy Awards, and I woofed about him in a text to Gary. He agreed after watching the same newscast on the web. Gary also briefed me on the weather back home: Governor Inslee had declared a state of emergency due to the unusual amount of snow. I caught him up on my schedule for the rest of the weekend and went to sleep.
