Out & Equal Summit Day 1 - Monday
Oct. 1st, 2018 11:59 pmI did a full work day from home before the Global Dinner to kick off the Out & Equal Workplace Summit. Decided to drive downtown because the weather wasn't great and Maps said it would be an extra hour by bus. I think it doesn't grok park and rides. Parked and picked up my badge.
While waiting for the dinner to start, I met and had a nice chat with Kris Mordecai from the O&E staff in San Francisco. He'd just started his job there last Monday. Sat with Jonathan from New York City, who works for a firm called Medidata Solutions which helps pharmaceutical companies with random drug trial data. Cute bear photographer asked if he could "take a picture of you gentlemen" and Jonathan said "We're not gentlemen..." 😊 Later his colleague Joey arrived (cute cub) and they introduced me to Doug from Spotify. All three are members of NYCGMC. Meanwhile I chatted with Kevin Bleyle from SMC who was sitting at the next table with two ladies. Once we all were seated, René from Oracle in the Netherlands joined us.
The sponsor from HSBC said "Be the rainbow in somebody's cloud." This year's program is based in Brazil, with two fellowship students giving speeches as well as two O&E leaders. As we dug into dinner (chicken breast and peg-leg wrapped in prosciutto with risotto, carrots and sundried tomatoes), Michael from Dallas joined us. He works for a small IT service provider.
After we finished dinner, Shira from the Trevor Project came over and chatted briefly. René and I chatted about many things, including Catholic school and fetish day in Berlin. Toward the end of the evening, Ryan from Boeing came by and refilled everyone's wine glasses (except Michael's as he doesn't drink).
On the way out I took a photo for a nice looking black dude who happens to be CEO of a nonprofit called INvolve who advise folks in the C-suite about intersectionality. He and his partner are going to be involved in the first-timer orientation in the morning. Had a pleasant drive home.
