bigmacbear: Me in a leather jacket and Hockey Night in Canada ball cap, on a ferry with Puget Sound in background (Rochester)
Gradually the last remnants of our life in Rochester are falling away. Last week I received the closing statement on our condo, which officially sold on the 12th; last night I got the final electric bill, which will be paid from my credit union account in Rochester on May 6th. Between now and then, I need to get Sprint to bill from my Alaska credit union account (they're here in WA because of Alaska Airlines and serve both AK and WA residents) and then I can close my Rochester accounts completely.

What got me thinking about this was observing that one of the last of our bathroom supplies we brought with us (a box of cotton swabs) is about to run out and be replaced, leaving just one Wegmans-branded product in the bathroom (a bottle of ibuprofen that expires in September). We do have a few other things in the kitchen that will take some time to go through, but most of the other stuff we threw out as we left because it was old and stale.

It Lives!

I mentioned in my post last weekend about Spring Thaw that my digital camera had died. So I thought, until today. I went into the troubleshooting page at Kodak and went through all the steps they suggested, including removing and replacing the batteries (which I'd done last weekend). They suggested I trade in the old camera for a freshly reconditioned, newer model. So I went to fill out the paperwork to trade it in on a bigger, more professional style unit, and they directed me to a 1-800 number to finalize the deal. When I called it turned out they were closed for the weekend. I thought "no problem, they're on East Coast schedule so I'll call them before I go to work on Monday."

Then I got the bright idea to take out the 64 MB CompactFlash card and put back the 8 MB card that came with the camera, thinking that I could use the flash card for temporary storage (I have an adapter it fits in that works like a USB key-fob storage stick). Then I turn the camera on for one last check, and lo and behold it comes to life! I think what must have happened is that either a) after the total discharge of the batteries, something internal to the camera had to get recharged, or b) somehow the key on my CompactFlash card was busted and I had it in backward. It did no permanent damage, because I was then able to re-insert my card (the right way) and the camera worked.

So Monday morning I shall call Kodak and tell them never mind. I may order the new camera anyway though; I'm sure in this house they will both get plenty of use.

I suppose I have a lot to post about tonight. I posted a rant (strong language) about Ciba Vision's abrupt discontinuance of my prescribed contact lens solution. They're still not back, but I've had no problems switching to the more common sodium citrate-based cleaner from the now-unavailable hydrogen peroxide-based solution Ciba sold. This despite the mantra of "do not change solutions without consulting your eye care professional." Good riddance, to put it politely. ) I now have two big, wonderful bottles of Walgreens-brand no-rub solution and am doing just fine, thank you.

It took a complete shutdown of one of the major players in the contact-lens industry to tell the world what an outright scam this is. Well, I'm with Anne: "You are the weakest link. Goodbye."
