Misreading lyrics
Feb. 18th, 2007 08:31 pmToday I went to a special section rehearsal for the basses, and had sort of a Mondegreen experience in reverse (for those who aren't familiar with the term, it refers to mishearing the lyrics of a song, as the woman did who heard "They have slain the Earl of Murray, and Lady Mondegreen" when what they'd done was slay the Earl of Murray and lay him on the green).
Reading through an old piece of sheet music, I realized that I didn't have enough light and the typeface was kind of old, when I read "Helmets gleaming, pennants streaming" as "Helmets gleaming, peasants screaming". Some of the other basses thought that might actually fit the context a bit better. ;-)
