The David G. McManus Memorial Gallery

Spent a few minutes this morning hanging the three paintings of my grandfather's I own in the upstairs hallway.

Grandpa always wrote on the back of his paintings, including one to several long paragraphs about the subject of the painting along with his signature and the year. One of the paintings is his self-portrait, and the back carries pretty much his complete résumé from his early days as a commercial lithographer, carving printing plates for posters for the circus, movies, and political campaigns, to his retirement when he painted these pictures among a host of others.

I decided to give these paintings the full gallery treatment, transcribing the inscriptions on the back of each painting, printing the text along with the title, artist, and medium, and hanging the description under each painting. I asked [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear if he thought that pretentious and he said "no" with much force.

So I present the David G. McManus Memorial Gallery, in our upstairs hall.
Painting, Time of Roses, David G. McManus
Painting, American Dreamer, David G. McManus
Painting, Brigantine Yankee, David G. McManus

Hope you enjoy.

What a cool piece of family history! I'm envious. I treasure the memories I have of my maternal grandfather, who was a wise old man, full of stories from his life and times. I wish I had known him longer, but I'm grateful for the time I did have with him.

You are a lucky man to have these wonderful remembrances of your grandfather, and you have done a great job of preserving them in a very beautiful way.

Good for you, bud!

I never knew any of my grandfathers for they all died years earlier. My Maternal grandfather died when my Mom was young, my Paternal grandfather passed away when my oldest sister was still a baby and my Dad's mother passed away when he was young but I got to know my Maternal grandmother whom lived a long life, passing on at I think 82 back in 1991.
