Afternoon drive

Since [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear wanted to sleep and the weather was so nice, I took the new VUE out for a spin this afternoon.

First stop was Fry's, where I picked up a wireless access point with a 4-port internal hub to connect Gary's old PC to the wireless network, and a cheap VCR intended for the sole purpose of using to tune the standard cable channels on an old TV with a manual tuner.

Next I stopped by Taco del Mar in Southcenter and called up Gary to see if he wanted lunch. It turned out he was still sleepy, so I decided to take a little more of an exploratory drive and pick up burritos on the way home. I asked what time he wanted to eat and he said about four (it was then almost one-thirty).

Since I hadn't eaten breakfast, I grabbed a sandwich at a nearby Subway where a young family were behind me in line. The father was rather cubbish in appearance. His toddler son surprised me by steadying himself by grabbing my leg, which elicited the remark from his mother that "there are no strangers to him". We laughed. As they were getting situated the fourth member of the family, a blonde girl of about three or four, inquired how I liked my sandwich. I really enjoyed it and it must have showed on my face.

From the Subway I headed south on the Valley Freeway to see where it would take me. All along the route Mount Rainier became more and more prominent on the horizon as I approached. So I decided to head east at Route 18 in Auburn which, as I soon found out from a roadside sign, is the hometown of Governor Christine Gregoire. I followed a smaller highway out toward Enumclaw and Mount Rainier (which a sign proclaimed "closed" along the way). Eventually I found a spot just past Muckleshoot Casino where a clearing provided a decent view of the mountain from the roadside, and took a picture with my cellphone:

Then I turned around and headed off to explore in a new direction. When I got back to Route 18 I followed it back to I-5 and then decided to try out the old Alaskan Way Viaduct in downtown Seattle. So I diverted off I-5 at Route 599 which becomes Route 99 near Sea-Tac. Just south of the viaduct itself there must have been an accident since traffic was bumper-to-bumper for about half an hour. The view from the viaduct northbound is stunning but it does go by awfully fast. After clearing the tunnel at Western Avenue it was getting close to four, so I returned to I-5 and headed back to downtown Renton to pick up our lunch at Taco del Mar, and returned home.

By the way, the VCR works fine for its intended purpose -- we tested it out by watching a bit of hockey on channel 99 -- and I think I'll install the network hub later.

All in all, a day for recharging my batteries in the sunshine and doing a little exploring.

Nice drive!

When I'm a bit more flush money wise, I intend to do just that with the truck. :-)
