Dismemberment and child abuse
Two wholly unrelated things that happened this weekend:
Dismemberment: Yesterday (Saturday) morning I hacked up an old gnarly pine tree that was taking up about half the space in my front patio and dug up what I could of the roots. I think we'll probably eliminate the planting bed there altogether (the only bush left there is a slightly overgrown yew which I think we'll also dispose of), pave the remainder of the area with antique red bricks and plant a container garden. Gives us a bit more flexibility and keeps the condo association off our backs with "your trees are too tall" and what not.
Child abuse: Last night we watched Our Fathers, a TV movie with Ted Danson as the attorney who sued Bernard Cardinal Law to force the Archdiocese of Boston to deal with its pedophile priests.
gmjambear wasn't too impressed with the movie, he's seen better treatments of the topic at hand (and wishes I'd seen The Boys of St. Vincent). Afterwards I showed him some documents I'd downloaded from the Boston Globe in which Fr. Paul Shanley (one of the convicted priests from Boston) had addressed my church way back in 1977, which was our local connection to the whole thing, sad as it is.
By the way, now that I've got your attention, the Empire Bears are holding a Summer Rendezvous in northern Pennsylvania at Oneida Camp and Lodge. Go ahead, check it out! ;-)
