Home on the Range

So this week we've had a bit of an adventure. On Sunday Gary tried to use the self-cleaning cycle on our old oven that came with the house. Unfortunately, the control system went on the fritz and permanently locked the door. I called our favorite appliance dealer, Judd and Black, and verified that the oven was well beyond its End of Service Life as we say in the tech industry, and could not be repaired.

So on Wednesday we stopped by the store in search of a replacement. We were met by a lean young salesman named Chris, who sported a bald head, a thick black beard under his mask, and a number of tattoos including the number "5150" in Gothic script on his left forearm. Gary was curious about the significance of the number, and I told him afterward that it's the title of an album by Rush.

We perused a few of the floor models, and Chris informed us there's an ongoing shortage of appliances of all sorts due to the shutdown of factories during the pandemic. So we soon went to the sales desk and looked at printouts of the models still available on sales floors around the region, as far away as Bellingham. As he toiled at the computer, he called to his mother at the next desk for assistance once or twice; his father had called asking for him just as we took our seats the first time. So clearly it's a family business. We left with a quote for four units, three of which were on sales floors and one which was on a truck en route to the Tukwila distribution center. On the way home we picked up dinner at Famous Dave's barbecue.

Thursday morning I called Chris back to place an order for the latter unit, which has a lot of interesting features and, though there are no guarantees, can be expected late next week. For dinner we had grilled pork chops with steamed spinach and leftover psketti and red sauce.

Yesterday I had to call to get the email copy of the order. We ended up having our usual seafood dinner from Ivar's.

This morning I did some shopping. First I picked up buns and bagels from Hans and Franz, then stopped by Freddie's for lunch meat and mustard; in the checkout line, a lady in a red sparkly mask complimented me on my beard. The next stop was Costco. Ahead of me in line was a short, skinny Hispanic dude in orange sneaks, dark grey camo sweatpants with an A&F tape down the sides, a maroon T-shirt, black ball cap and mask, had an impressive sleeve tattoo on his right arm and the beginnings of another on his left. He was accompanied by an equally short but buxom companion in a tight black top, ultra short monochrome plaid skirt, and knee-high black patent leather boots; her hair was jet-black and in a bowl cut. I complimented him on the ink while she shopped. I called Gary and he wasn't hungry for lunch, so I stopped by Memo's Mexican restaurant for a burrito for lunch and returned home.
