State map

create your own visited states map
or check out these Google Hacks.

Update: I noticed [livejournal.com profile] henare made a copy of his map so it loads faster. If you just use the code they give you, it has to generate a new map every time somebody reads your journal entry, and as this becomes more popular it is going to swamp the poor server at douweosinga.com. So I made copies of my generated map and [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear's, and we linked to them instead.

If you would like to do this yourself, here's how:
  1. Make the copy of the map by right-clicking on the displayed map and selecting "Save Picture As" or "Save Image As" in the pop-up menu. (I'm sure Mac users can do something similar from the menu in their browser, but I don't know the details.)

  2. Upload the picture to your picture server. See this FAQ for requirements for image hosting.

  3. Replace the URL that follows '<img src="' in the code you copied from douweosinga.com with the URL of your copy of the map. Don't change the other two links.

  4. Optional: If you really want the map to load fast (especially in IE), determine the dimensions of the map you made (mine are 550 x 338, and they should all be the same if they're being generated the way I think they are) and add "width" and "height" attributes to the image tag.
Example:
<img src="http://www.bigmacbear.com/LJ/mike-state-map.gif" width="550" height="338">

Also: After looking at [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear's page I counted up the electoral votes of the states I visited and got 428 (you only need 270 to be President). Yippee! (If only it were that easy. ;-)

Hey, cool! Your post showed me how to make (faux) HTML code appear like HTML code! Up 'til now I've had to use brackets and stuff...
