Distances
While
verytiredmummy and his travel companion Mark were visiting Seattle, I happened to mention that
gmjambear and I had traveled about 29001 miles (4667 km) on our move trip from Rochester to Renton.
I thought to look up that distance and see how far that would get you in Europe. The longest road distance I could find in Europe, according to the ViaMichelin map site, is only 4577 km from Lisbon to Moscow. Close enough, I think.
I also mentioned the story of the German executive who needed to travel from Rochester to Calgary via Toronto. She thought it would be quicker to fly to Toronto and drive from there to Calgary when in fact the reverse is true. I suspect she thought it was a lot farther to the Canadian border and that Canada is nowhere near the size it is.
1 It appears the slip of paper upon which Gary calculated the exact mileage we traveled has been lost, and I have spent much of the day going more-or-less quietly mad trying to find anywhere where I'd committed that figure to writing. I do recall it was about 2900 miles although in calculating my moving expenses for tax purposes I'd recorded it as 2700, which is inconsequential because either figure is much greater than the 50 miles required by tax law.
