I came up with this pithy (or was that "pissy"? take your pick) remark while reading this morning about the impending US Senate vote today to suspend habeas corpus and basically give the Administration a free pass when it comes to torturing detainees.

My opinion, as I expressed to my Senators this morning in phone messages, is that a vote for this bill is a clear violation of their oaths of office, just as much as the drawing up and railroading of the bill through Congress by the Administration is a violation of the oath of office of everyone involved, right down to the President himself.

The New York Times had an excellent editorial explaining how bad this bill is, on a par with the John Adams administration and the Alien and Sedition Acts ramrodded through that Congress 200-and-some-odd years ago.

I'm glad to hear you took direct action by letting your Senators know exactly how you feel. So many Americans just sit there and either don't care or can't be bothered to do anything but murmur, "Oh, isn't that awful?".

As bad as this is, I DO feel the tide turning, and I am optimistic that the November mid-term election will result in a change in control of both the House and Senate.

I just wish the Democratic Party had better leadership and could be trusted to use the opportunity wisely.
