Wal-Mart denies charge of union-busting in announcing closure of Quebec store
I suspect Wal-Mart Canada will be duking it out with the union in court over this one, if it isn't the subject of a criminal case first. My prediction: If the government succeeds in making the case that Wal-Mart is engaging in illegal union-busting, Wal-Mart will most happily pull out of Canada entirely rather than accept unions.
NHL season on brink of cancellation if deal not in the works by weekend
Speaking of union-busting... this appears to be a classic case of bargaining in bad faith. However, the fact that the NHL crosses national boundaries makes it problematic for either the US or the Canadian government to step in. Wonder how many seasons of no revenue it will take before the NHL is forced out of business and someone with more smarts can take over.

Ah, finally some good news. It was a revelation to me when I was informed only a couple years ago or so that The Guess Who are Canadian, it made "American Woman" make a whole lot more sense to me (as is cheerfully explained by Burton Cummings in this article). Good work guys!

1. Wal-mart departing Canada would be fine by me. Let a better, more progressive company like Target come up here, instead.
2. Couldn't agree with you more. Gary Bettman has managed to make the NHL irrelevant in this country that lives and breathes hockey. If the NHL goes under, a better organization will rise like a phoenix from the ashes.
3. Nice to see the guys get their due. Of the short snippets of the big Rolling Stones "SARS-stock" concert here a couple of summers ago, the most electrifying for me was the set by the Guess Who. No question, the boys still have it. And while he looked ghastly in the photo in the article, it was good to see Gordon Lightfoot well enough to get out to the ceremony.

Guess the damned unions are good for something after all.
