Dinner and a Bus Trip

Today was the final day of my training class, on "Advanced Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0MP3". For those who speak English rather than tech-ese, it was about software to manage disk storage attached to very large servers. The class was offered as a "Virtual Academy", so I needed to take it somewhere where I wouldn't be disturbed. Since I have only a noisy cubicle at work, I elected to take the class at home over the VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.

Since I hadn't gotten out of the house much all week I really appreciated taking the trip to Capitol Hill for dinner at Café Septiéme with friends near and far. On the way south we got the standard forty-foot coach rather than the sixty-foot articulated bus, which was surprising for rush hour, but we were traveling in the reverse commute direction and the driver, a young bearish fellow, hinted that this was his last run for the day so perhaps this bus wasn't going to be used for a return trip in the peak direction. Up front a tall, thin young fellow of about twenty lounged with his feet up on the seat, a big no-no but one that is often overlooked.

Dinner was a blast. We had lots of good conversation and there were congratulations for [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear and me signing up for NaNoWriMo. I had a cup of minestrone and a red curry with chicken; Gary had the roast chicken. I asked Gary if he wanted dessert but he declined. I had the caramel flan, partly so we could re-enact the scene from Real Women Have Curves (Gary: "Don't eat the flan!" Me: [chomp]). Pictures up at my Gallery.

On the way back we caught one of the 60-foot articulated buses which was filling up fast. Gary took a seat in the middle of the back bench, between a woman wolfing down dinner from Ivar's and another young dude sleeping with his feet up and his head smushed up against the window. This one was kinda cute, with a scruffy goatee. I ended up sitting in front of the Ivar's lady and opposite sleepy dude. Also riding in the back section was a woman who had a small dog wrapped in a blanket, both of whom slept most of the way to our stop. Unfortunately, all the activity of folks getting off at our stop startled the dog which began barking as we left.

A fine evening if I do say so myself.
