Home for the Holidays

For his final Yuletide concert, Dennis Coleman is wrapping up his naughty and nice audience favorites, just for you! We have traditional holiday favorites ranging from a cappella sacred settings, through the "What If" carols (as reimagined by some famous Broadway composers), on to a rockin' Christmas adaptation of a possibly recognizable tune.

Our guest artist for opening weekend is Tituss Burgess, star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and 30 Rock. Don't miss out! Tickets for all shows available through Flying House Productions (except Tacoma through the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts).

Last night the Seattle Men's Chorus had our premiere performance of Falling In Love Again, a look at life in Germany before and during the Nazi era.

Act One features the music of Weimar Germany which inspired the musical Cabaret, including the title tune and "Wilkommen" from that musical. The Emcee from Cabaret is portrayed by Nick Garrison and I must say he's done an excellent job in the role. I get to play one of the three pigs in "Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?"; I'm the one with the brick house. (Cue up "Brick House" -- oh wait, that isn't period. :-) Also we have the Spectrum Dance company in several numbers, and Frau Schnaub, portrayed by a simply huge young chorus member (who can't wait to start growing his beard again ;-), in the comic dance number "Fräulein, Pardon". The title tune of our concert is performed by a chorus member impersonating Marlene Dietrich and backed up by the full chorus.

Act Two is an operatic piece entitled For a Look or a Touch, originally a "chamber opera" for baritone and speaking actor, and expanded to include a small ensemble (Captain Smartypants) and a full men's chorus. The chorus represents the gay men sent to the concentration camps in Nazi Germany, with costumes and makeup to create a haunting, zombie-like effect. The actor portraying Gad Beck, an aging Holocaust survivor, is David Pichette who is a well-known Seattle actor and portrayed Voltaire in last year's production of Candide. The baritone soloist, Morgan Smith, portrays the ghost of Gad's lover, Manfred Lewin, who perished in the camps.

If you have the time I would highly recommend coming to see the show at 2:00 this afternoon at McCaw Hall.

Act Two features a moving chamber opera entitled For a Look or a Touch about the persecution of gay men in Nazi Germany.

• I am rapidly coming to the realization that I'm not going to come anywhere close to the NaNoWriMo goal of 50K words by November 30, given my other commitments this month. I will, however, continue writing as time permits, see how far I get, and maybe try again next year.

• Our neighborhood association is inviting Zack Dailey from the Everett Silvertips (see post) to speak to us next Tuesday the 24th. Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend since I have dress rehearsal for the show that night. Rats. [livejournal.com profile] gmjambear LOL'ed and said he'd try to get a picture.

• Speaking of the show, our first performances are only a week away: Saturday, 11/28 and Sunday, 11/29 at Benaroya Hall, Seattle. These will be our headline performances with Betty Buckley. We will be using the magnificent pipe organ this year! Also we have A Very Special Christmas Special, a piece adapted from Little Shop of Horrors (in which I play a harried grandpa), a Bollywood number complete with an Indian dance troupe, and a tribute to Michael Jackson. Further details and a link to tickets here.

[livejournal.com profile] gmjambear came to see our SMC concert, Comedy Tonight!, last night at McCaw Hall, so I can now mention some highlights of the show for those interested in coming to tonight's performance:

  • Leslie Jordan is a hoot! He tells a number of stories, one of which opens up into a big production number involving a huge bed and a troop (or is that "troupe?") of R.O.T.C. (Righteously Outrageous Twirling Corps) members.
  • Don't miss the caveman scene. [livejournal.com profile] grammarcub is the star of this number and our wigs and makeup folks have outdone themselves.
  • There is plenty of choreography and plenty of the unique humor of Eric Lane Barnes. Captain Smartypants has a couple of crowd-pleasers, including one featured in their recent show Cirque du Slaque.
  • Seattle Women's Chorus will be joining us for one piece and will also present one of the songs from their recent concert Vixen Fiction/Siren Song which they will be performing at GALA 2008 in Miami.

Hope to see all our Seattle peeps at the show!

Originally I typed "out" instead of "our" in that last sentence. But no, I don't care whether you're gay or straight, in the closet or not: come see us anyway! ;-)

This weekend the Seattle Men's Chorus begins a run of nine (!) performances of our holiday extravaganza, Home For the Holidays.

I hope at least, all Seattlites who read my journal will have the opportunity to see us perform. We'll be singing with Hokum Jeeves, an instrumentalist who specializes in unusual instruments such as the saw and the toy piano. The show also features the Aluminum Christmas Tree and over 200 singing teddy bears! It's been a lot of work and I think once you see the show you'll agree it's been worth it.

Saturday we open in Everett at the Civic Auditorium at 8 PM. On Sunday we have our big opening night at 8 with guest artist Judy Collins at Benaroya Hall (however, this performance is sold out). Then next weekend (Dec. 8-9) we have two shows in Tacoma at the Rialto on Saturday (2 and 8 PM) and another show at Benaroya on Sunday. Finally (after a weekend off), the weekend before Christmas (Dec. 21-23) we have three evening (8 PM) performances and a Sunday (2 PM) matinee all at Benaroya.

Hope to see you there!
