Longtime Seattle Men's Chorus director to retire

Dennis Coleman, longtime artistic director of the Seattle Men's Chorus and Seattle Women's Chorus has announced that he will retire next year.

His final Seattle-area concert will be the SMC Summer concert held in conjunction with Pride Week in June of 2016.

Coleman will take his final bow at the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses) Festival in Denver in 2016.

I'm happy for Dennis and excited to find out what comes next. There will be a number of committees, made up of board members, singers, and other stakeholders including audience members and donors: one tasked with planning a big send-off for Dennis including two commissioned works, one with fundraising for the organization related to the occasion, and one with the search for new artistic direction for the Choruses.

I happened to be reading an article in the [livejournal.com profile] seattle community about the shootings last night at Chop Suey in Capitol Hill, and followed a link in the comments to the Slog's take on the incident. On returning from the link, quoth the Raven, "404" -- page not found. It appears the LJ article has been obliterated from the system.

Now I did notice that the original poster was a bit concerned about receiving responses in her mailbox, and had edited the original post to read, in part, "I don't want to discuss it anymore". So that could be a simple case of the original poster getting cold feet. But once a message is deleted, there is no way to find out who deleted it or why.

My take:

It is a tragedy when someone gets killed for no good reason, no matter who it is, and there are in the end no good reasons for killing someone, but only sadly necessary ones such as self-defense.

Absolute prevention of crime is impossible, just as perfect security is an unattainable goal. Thus talk of banning this or that genre of music, confiscating all guns, and the like is in the end futile. Blaming guns, hip-hop music, or anyone else but the shooter is useless, and fixing the blame is usually not helpful in fixing the problem.

Noted with some amusement, someone in the [livejournal.com profile] seattle community mentioned the KING 5 reporter chatting with someone at the scene on a cell phone kept referring to the group riding these ill-fated buses up near [livejournal.com profile] ciddyguy's apartment as the Moses Lake "Jazz Choir" instead of "Job Corps".

Imagine, if you will, a jazzy show choir doing a fabulous rendition of Weird Al Yankovic's "Another One Rides The Bus".

Or not.
